The Florida Power Electronics Center, (FPEC) at the
University of Central Florida was established in 1998 to carry on research and development activities in energy conversion systems using power electronics as an enabling technology. The Center's mission is to develop advanced energy conversion technologies for solar and other renewable sources through multidisciplinary engineering research and education in the field of power electronics. The research vision is to achieve significant improvements in power density, efficiency, reliability, and cost-effectiveness of electric energy processing systems by developing innovative topology and control techniques, power semiconductor devices, passive components, and packaging and system integration techniques. The center currently has four
faculty members, 3 affiliate faculty members, and 30 graduate research assistants and staff members.
The centers research has resulted in the publication of more than 100 journal articles and 300 presentations to international and national conferences. Graduated more than 35 Ph.D. Dissertations, 50 MS Theses, and more than twenty-five U.S. patents. Funding agencies include: Department of Energy, Ford, Lockheed-Martin, Free Scale, Army, Air Force, NASA, Emerson, Petra Solar, Intel, Electrodynamics, Lockheed Martin, Allied Signals, ApECOR, and the Industry Application Society of IEEE. The center secured more than $12 million in research funding. FPEC was part of a $8.75 million for UCFs research in energy conversion and integration technologies as part of a $50 million State of Florida Center of Excellence, now known as
Florida Solar Energy Consortium (FESC).
Recently,
Dr. Batarseh helped co-found a new start up company know as
Petra Solar by using exiting IP at UCF. The company recently received a $40 million Round B in venture capitals funding after it raised $14 million in round A in 2007. The company is developing very innovative AC PV Modules with smart grid capabilities. The UCF-Petra Solar joint research and development will introduce a paradigm change in solar energy harvesting, and help foster a PV integration industry in Florida and provide a unique opportunity to revitalize and grow the States manufacturing sector and create new jobs.
